A classification of the physical status of the PATIENT as recorded by an anaesthetist for the operative procedure.

This is the American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA) Physical Status Classification System, see the American Society of Anesthesiologists website.

A type of ASSESSMENT TOOL.

A unique identifier for a CLINICAL CLASSIFICATION, for example this could be an OPCS-4 code or a Read code.

The codes for both OPCS-4 and Read are maintained by NHS Connecting for Health.

This could also be a PATIENT DIAGNOSIS.

Diagnoses should be classified where possible using ICD-10 or other classification codes approved centrally for mapping to ICD-10 codes. Clinical Terms (The Read Codes) can be used in addition to ICD-10 codes for Patient Diagnosis. Clinical Terms (The Read Codes) can be used in addition to ICD-10 codes for PATIENT DIAGNOSIS. However Clinical Terms (The Read Codes) are not accepted for the purposes of central Hospital Episode Statistics data, where ICD-10 is mandatory.

ICD-10 diagnostic codes are at least four characters in length. The first character is always alphabetic. Where an undivided three character code is used, the fourth character must be filled with 'X'.

Fifth characters should be used in accordance with the guidance in International Classification of Diseases (ICD-10). Where they are not used the character must be filled with a '-'. The sixth character of the code is used to designate an asterisk or dagger indicator in ICD-10; it may be an 'A' or 'D'.

It is the date on which the first order was made in this period of detention, even though the section of the Act under which the PATIENT is detained may have changed, the PATIENT may have been transferred to another provider or the PATIENT was detained under the Act after admission to the current provider. All changes in MENTAL HEALTH ACT LEGAL STATUS CLASSIFICATION CODE should be recorded, and the continuous period of detention obtained by comparing the PERSON PROPERTY EFFECTIVE DATES for the historical Legal Status records. (Act refers to the 1983 Mental Health Act).

Where the detention order is held by a hospital other than that where the PATIENT is present at the date of the census, the latter should ensure the information relating to this detention order is obtained from the former hospital. Only the hospital where the PATIENT is treated should submit the data.

Legal Status is a CATEGORY VALUED PERSON OBSERVATION where CATEGORY VALUED PERSON OBSERVATION TYPE is National Code 07 'Legal Status Classification'.
