The Diagnostics Waiting Times and Activity Data Set provides definitions to support the national data collections on diagnostic tests, a key element towards monitoring waits from referral to treatment. Organisations responsible for the diagnostic test activity report the diagnostic test waiting times and the number of tests completed.

The distinctions between the data set groups are not absolute and some procedures could be collected under more than one of the clinical groupings. A PATIENT waiting for a diagnostic investigation should be counted only once for each test they are waiting for, wherever the test is to be performed and even if there is any additional therapeutic intervention. The Emergency Care Weekly Situation Report Data Set is a provider-based return. However, data returns are only required from provider Organisations where

• emergency admissions are at least 10 per week and/or
• attendances average more than 50 attendances per week.

Independent Sector Organisations that provide NHS-funded care are required to provide the Emergency Care Weekly Situation Report Data Set.

The Mixed-Sex Accommodation Data Set collects performance information on a monthly basis from Health Care Providers of NHS funded care, including independent sector and social enterprise/voluntary organisations, on the number of occurrences of breaches of the sleeping accommodation guidance. However the count of occurrences of breaches exclude private and self-funded PATIENTS in NHS Health Care Providers.

A breach occurs at the point a PATIENT is admitted to mixed-sex accommodation or moves to mixed-sex accommodation from Same Sex Accommodation.

Breaches of bathroom accommodation, including situations where a PATIENT must pass through opposite gender areas to reach their own facilities, and no provision of women-only lounges in mental health units, must be recorded at organisation level, and plans put in place to deal with the problem. However these types of breaches are not reported in the Mixed-Sex Accommodation Data Set.

• The Mixed-Sex Accommodation Data Set is a monthly provider based return.

The National Direct Access Audiology Waiting Times Data Set collects performance information on a monthly basis on the Referral To Treatment pathways of PATIENTS who are receiving NHS funded audiology treatment in England, who are not already included in the Referral To Treatment Data Set data collection. • both analogue and digital hearing aid fittings
• services provided directly by NHS Healthcare Providers and also NHS funded PATIENTS treated via the Independent Sector and third sector providers (collected directly or via Primary Care Trusts)
• both new and existing PATIENTS
• any other PATIENTS attending Audiology services directly

For the purposes of the National Direct Access Audiology Waiting Times Data Set, "Direct Access" means PATIENTS who are not referred via Ear, Nose and Throat (ENT) specialist or other hospital CONSULTANT. Any pathways that are subject to the 18 week waiting time target for Referral to Treatment are out of scope. For this reason PATIENTS on Ear, Nose and Throat pathways (or pathways from other specialties) are excluded from this central return data set - information on these PATIENTS is available via the Referral To Treatment Data Set data collection.

The National Direct Access Audiology Waiting Times Data Set is in two parts, as follows:

Part 1 - Treated Patients should be completed for PATIENTS who have had an ACTIVITY which ends their REFERRAL TO TREATMENT PERIOD (such as first definitive treatment, or a decision not to treat), within the REPORTING PERIOD.

• R - Summary information, where available, for Hospital Bed occupancy for each CARE PROFESSIONAL MAIN SPECIALTY CODE. This information is required, i.e. it should be reported for each CARE PROFESSIONAL MAIN SPECIALTY CODE where BED DAYS IN WARDS OPEN DAY ONLY (OCCUPIED) and BED DAYS IN WARDS OPEN OVERNIGHT (OCCUPIED) are recorded.

A Restrictive Intervention is a CLINICAL INTERVENTION.

Restrictive Interventions are defined by the Department of Health as:

• Deliberate acts on the part of other person(s) that restrict an individual’s movement, liberty and/or freedom to act independently in order to:
  • take immediate control of a dangerous situation where there is a real possibility of harm to the person or others if no action is undertaken; and
  • end or reduce significantly the danger to the person or others; and
  • contain or limit the person's freedom for no longer than is necessary.
